Courage
by P.J. Sutherland

8/00

I'm afraid to face these emotions.
Three simple words that should come easy.
Can I surrender my heart and soul?
Do I dare give hostage to fortune?

In innocent youth words came easy.
A little boy says "I wuv u mommy,"
and basks in the warmth of mothers love.
But happy childhood days are soon past.

And a young teen strives to win his place,
seeking a father's love, a father's pride.
Not accolades or shiny medals.
Just a simple phrase "I love you son."

Seeking love in the arms of women,
those three little words fall from his lips.
But they are never said in his heart,
when his careful world falls around him.

Family and friends forever lost,
A wanderer who's not worthy of love.
Drinking, fighting, no future in sight,
mercenary unable to love.

Flying and money his only gods,
A criminal no one will ever love.
Forever denied his greatest dream,
redeemed soul in search of happiness.

In his heart a flame flickers to life,
spreading warmth to a weary soul.
B'Elanna, who's all fire and passion,
declaring him worthy to be loved.

Those three words once so easily said,
trapped in a heart afraid to love,
yet showing love in a thousand ways.
She's gone maybe never to return.

I must keep faith and believe in her.
Once more I will hold her in my arms.
Can I surrender my heart and soul?
Do I dare give hostage to fortune?

Yes, I've finally found the strength,
The courage to face my greatest fear,
Love freely given and received.
B'Elanna Torres, I love you.
